KEWS 300
Paperless Patient Observation
KEWS is a software product which is deployed in hospital settings at point-of-care. It is configured as a Client:Server system. Its principal function is to make Patient Observation Records a central element within the Health Information System, informing accurate, responsive clinical care and supporting better Patient outcomes. It allows the caregiver, such as a Nurse, to complete Patient observations in a digitally-supported mode through the use of a Tablet touchscreen which is WiFi-linked to the Central Station of the Ward and also to the Server.
This Tablet at the point-of-care and the Central Station display screen may be considered as Clients of the Server software. Off-ward access to the system may also be provided to authorised users such as Clinical Consultants, Doctors and the Director of Nursing, via Client software on their devices.
The medically-approved software is configured to reflect the standard observation chart in use in the particular hospital and the Graphical User Interface is designed to ease accurate, efficient data-entry and review. It is configured with a Bar-Code reader, for safety and efficiency when identifying Patients via their bar-coded wrist-band.

Key Features
Where possible the Tablet is fixed to the vital-sign monitor roll-stand which accompanies the Nurse in doing Patient rounding. A common example of such equipment would be General Electric’s V100 Dinamap (see above). The Tablet is connected via a short cable with the output port of the monitor. The Client accepts direct feed of data from the interfaced vital-sign monitor together with manual inputs (and possible overrides) from the caregiver. When not directly interfaced to the equipment the Client accepts manual inputs from the caregiver for all fields.
Once ‘saved’ by the Nurse the data is transmitted to the Server and to the Central Station. Typically the data would then be automatically fed to the EHR from the Server so that up-to-date patient vital-signs data and trends would be available to any authorised reviewer. Every time a Nurse completes a Patient observation the data is immediately available in the EHR. Equally, the data is also available instantly at the Central Station on the Ward and via any other authorised Client. This allows ‘Ward-status-at-a-glance’ for the Ward Manager which assists in reviewing patient acuity concerns, Nurse case-mix, resource management and protocol compliance.
